The Nashville Sudbury School opened its doors in August of 2018 and offers a rolling enrollment process. We have come a long way since 2015 when founder, Sonia Fernandez LeBlanc, read Free at Last by Daniel Greenberg shortly after learning about the Sudbury Model for the first time. She immediately started researching the model more in depth, created a Facebook group connecting with those in the Nashville community committed to freedom and democracy in learning. She discovered that she was most certainly not the only one in the Nashville and surrounding area interested in creating a space for liberatory learning in the spirit of Sudbury Valley School, established in 1968 in Framingham, MA.
In January 2016, a founders group was officially established with a total of 4 founding families. The journey to open a Sudbury school in Nashville began with monthly founders meetings, which were held on the 4th Monday of every month right up to the month we opened and transitioned to the school meeting and assembly structure that now runs the school.
The Nashville Sudbury School is a Category IV church exempt status school under the umbrella of Two Springs Fellowship, Inc., a 501(c)(3) secular religious organization that the founders established in 2017. Two Springs Fellowship, Inc, was established is to provide a democratically self-governed environment where exploration of personal truth and meaning happens freely and with responsibility. The community encourages the rights of all humans to follow their own learning path from early childhood to the end of life and every step in between without mandates on when and how they acquire the skills and information for which they are interested.
